Our students enter Harrisville-Wells Memorial School with a wide variety of abilities and experiences. We aim to understand, teach, and develop each individual, considering their intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. The teaching staff and parent(s)/guardian(s) must consider the whole child in acquiring a sensitivity and commitment to the education process.
Learning is a lifelong process. In understanding this process, we present sequential learning experiences that build upon one another. Students meet reasonable expectations that challenge them towards future goals. We believe that students should be successful at their level of development. The learning environment fosters an atmosphere of cooperation and respect, developed by teachers, students, and parent(s)/guardian(s).
HWMS focuses on outdoor learning opportunities, striving to increase instructional time in our fields, forests, and local habitats. All academic instruction is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, and student progress is reported on a standards-based report card. HWMS students and staff continue to embrace our norms centered around social-emotional development, bullying prevention, child protection, kindness, courage, perseverance, and empathy.
In teaching the whole child, we must be aware of all aspects of the student's development. Students will be successful when they are respected, express their feelings and emotions, and cooperate with their peers.
Harrisville has been designated as a federal landmark. We practice the responsibilities of citizenship and community living within the town, state, and nation. Our goal is to develop social skills and pride in the community that will allow each student to be a contributing member.
We believe that each student should have a positive self-image, be accepted as an individual, and be challenged by the learning process. We develop our school program towards these goals, continually seeking more effective ways to instill pride and achievement in each student.
HWMS Mission Statement
Knowledge and responsibility for today and tomorrow.
HWMS Vision Statement
The Harrisville-Wells Memorial School believes in diversity and well-being. We seek to empower students to independently solve problems, collaborate and communicate respectfully, take academic risks, and develop a positive growth mindset.

The John D. Perkins, Sr. Academy of Marlow is located on Route 10 approximately one mile north of the village of Marlow. Over the years the school's population has ranged between 35 and 70 students. The school is currently configured into four classrooms; kindergarten, grades 1 and 2, grades 3 and 4, and grades 5 and 6. Population in each classroom varies, but is normally below twenty students.
The school is on about ten acres of land and is bordered on the east by Route 10, on the south by a beautiful wetland which includes a number of beaver lodges, to the east by woodlands which are filled with ponds and trails, and to the north by a single residence which is not visible from the school because of the surrounding woodlands. Nearby is Bald Mountain which overlooks the village and surrounding area. The summit is less than an hour hike from the school on trails which begin on school property. Also nearby is the Ashuelot River, perfect for kayaking and superb trout fishing.
Marlow has a population of about 700 people and could be considered a prime example of what small town New England life is all about. In this setting a sense of family and support is evident in the school. Community members have come together to create remarkable changes in the school grounds over the years. A large, multi-faceted play structure sits in the center of the playground, and a nature observatory overlooks the wetlands to the south. Both were produced by partnerships between community members and school staff. In 2011 and outdoor classroom was built on school grounds by an Eagle Scout and graduate of Perkins Academy.
Most students ride the bus to school. Middle and high school students go to Keene schools, located about 18 miles south of Marlow. In the warmer months, some students ride bikes to school over woodland trails that run between the school and the village. Marlow is known as the "icebox of Cheshire County," and as a result, the climate is slightly colder than the surrounding area.

Nelson School is a small rural school with an enrollment of 75 students in grades K-5. The school excels in creating a family atmosphere through multi-grade classrooms, the implementation of an all school theme, and close interaction between classes. The 2013-2014 school year welcomed students from Sullivan to the Nelson School community. Since that time, both communities have worked collaboratively to support the Nelson Elementary School. With our recent expansion (March, 2018), the school has facilities to serve both communities for the foreseeable future.
In addition to academic subjects, Nelson offers music, art, physical education, Spanish, Nature Studies and after school instrumental lessons. Our students are supported by Title I services in reading and math, a special education teacher, a school counselor, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, and a school nurse.
The efforts of the staff to establish a productive and nurturing learning environment for children are greatly aided by strong community involvement and support. Nelson School is a place where there is a strong emphasis on basic skills, where there is excitement about learning, where there are high and clear expectations for performance, and where children are challenged to reach their full potential.
