welcome to this introduction on competency-based education we are excited to Keene High School is working to offer students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in this new way what is competency-based education competencies and competency-based education have been discussed in New Hampshire since 2005 when the state began building a policy that required districts to create their own competencies and assessments first we want to ensure that you understand what competency-based education is and we hope this video provides clarity competencies are all about students applying what they learn by demonstrating our Knowledge and Skills and authentic waist learning is not just about recalling and remembering facts is no longer King in the classroom content is the vehicle to enable students to demonstrate their learning our research has validated many things we already bolete students today must employ imagination curiosity adaptability perseverance problem solving and creativity in their educational career today's Learners need to be critical creative and collaborative and they must be able to communicate in a variety of ways competency-based education allow students to engage in more meaningful and relevant challenges in order to truly learn a concept in skill it's about students demonstrating what they can do with what they know it is important to acknowledge that there was nothing wrong play instruction used to be It Was preparing students for the world the way it was now we have a different world that we need to prepare our students for and Competency Based education provide student center learning for this world competency-based education ensures that stew acquire the Knowledge and Skills that are essential to be successful in school career and adult life what does this mean for Keene High School our goal is to prepare each student for the future we need to be sure that Future Leaders have this required to tackle the problems of tomorrow today's Keene high school students are those Future Leaders we are preparing students for an ever-changing world that will include jobs that currently do not exist we know that learning includes both knowledge competency-based education teaching students how to transfer these skills to new and unique situation but we aren't just working to prepare students for college-level work we also want to prepare them for career pathway we offer students a way to engage in projects that are connected to a career pathway that they're interested in and will help prepare them for their future competency-based education may still seem a little confusing to you so we're going to use a metaphor to help you understand this better a rope is created by weaving many strands together the more trans used at the stronger the Rope becomes think of competencies as the Rope this rope for competencies is created by strands that 10 standards construction skills habits and assessment all of these trains are important to create a strong rope the strongest ropes may have many strands every strand or skill is essential but it is important to number that no single strand represents all of the work when this meeting is done well students understand on many levels making them more fluent and flexible Learners who can transfer these skills in a variety of situations competency-based education teaching students how to weave a few strands together in order to create their own ropes that will prepare them to climb their individual ladder of success what has King High School already done first it is important to acknowledge that over the last we have conducted extensive research and have worked with professional organizations such as the center for collaborative education and paste to guide us on our journey as a stop we created for school-wide competencies also known as study practices used for school-wide competencies represent one of the strands of our rope I'll bring students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to collaborate communicate problem-solve and be responsible what's up you standards to develop curriculum for many years what is changing is that we have reviewed the state and National standards in order to develop Department competencies we shipped it existing standards in two different buckets of organizing where and when and how we address these standards and learning Targets this does not mean that everything we are doing is new it means we are focusing on doing it more effectively keeping in mind what is best for students in this ever-changing world this let us to review our current assessments determine I truly assess the transference of skills remember competency-based education focuses on using content as the vehicle for students to demonstrate transference of skills to new and unique situations we decided to use quality performances known as que pasa to measure students abilities to demonstrate the skill QP Ace provide challenging problems for projects that require students to think at higher levels which allows them to deep in their learn here are some examples research writing an argumentative essay writing a business plan giving a presentation analyzing a perspective of a historical figure participating in a collaborative discussion applying open science to building and designing projects for creating and implementing a personal fitness plan all teachers piloted 1 qpa in the spring of 2018 we will use feedback from this pilot to apply what we learn to other foot what does hatchimals we will be developing this year what does this mean for Keene high school students this year teachers full review curriculum to ensure does robust and uses content knowledge to teach skills teachers will collaborate to create more driving to offer common summative assessments for each course exam assess competencies teachers will engage in discussions around assessment practices eventually making decisions of grading and reporting for future years this year Keene High School will still operate under the grading and Reporting System it is used for many years you will not see changes to this for this year students grades will not be linked to meeting school-wide Department competencies where do we go from here now that you have learned about competency-based education and what can high school
