Wednesday, 3/25/2020 - SAU COVID-19 Update

Good Afternoon,

What an incredible response from yesterday’s “Snow Art Challenge!” It was so big that we are needing to create two separate slideshows to feature all of the outstanding submissions that were sent in.  Here is the first installment for your viewing pleasure.

I have heard some concerns about inappropriate use of the remote learning platforms, mostly with the older grade levels.  Our schools have been working on expectations and those are being shared below in the “Remote Learning” section for students in grades 6-12.  Expectations for K-5 are being worked on and will be shared later this week.  IMPORTANT TO NOTE:  We recognize that the issues that are being experienced with inappropriate use of the platforms are only by a few students and not by all, and will be addressed accordingly.  Additionally, and as a reminder, it is a good practice and perhaps even more so now than ever, to monitor what children are doing when they are on devices and what they are watching.

Our Technology Department has been superb throughout this process and have included updates on a daily basis.  They are continuing to be proactive to address issues as they arise.  Please take a couple of moments to respond to their survey when you have a moment to do so.  You can access the survey here.

Some SAU 29 School District Calendars had early release days and/or workshop days scheduled this week.  Please note that both tomorrow and Friday will be used as remote learning days.  Please follow the guidance from your teachers on the specific expectations during those days and times.  

The forecast is looking very favorable at this time on Saturday.  It may be worth considering how to incorporate some outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by your family.  Please be mindful to continue practicing social distancing during that time as well as other safety precautions.

Remote Learning: 

GRADES 6-12 Student Expectations For Remote Learning

  • The expectations are no different than daily classroom expectations.

  • Students are prepared and logged in at the beginning of each block at the designated times.

  • Students are dressed appropriately. 

  • During Google Meets, students must keep their video cameras off

  • Students must not share the Google Meet link with anyone, including parents and guardians. This link is for students enrolled in the class. 

  • Students must follow teacher directions for Google Meets (such as using microphones or chat)

Consequences For Not Following Student Expectations

  • SAU29 Districts have an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)  

  • Students and parents signed the AUP at the beginning of the school year.

  • Students who do not follow Google Meet expectations will receive the following consequences:

  • First Offense -Teacher will redirect the student during the Google Meet session.

  • Second Offense - If the behavior continues, the teacher will remove the student from the Google Meet session for that day, and the teacher will contact the parent about the inappropriate behavior.

  • Third Offense - If the behavior continues, the student will lose technology privileges for their school account for two days

    This means the student will not have access to any of their SAU account, including but not limited to, Google Classroom, Google Meet, and their school email for ALL classes and not just the one class where the inappropriate behavior was displayed. 

    Once the student’s account is turned back on after two days, the student will be responsible for making up the work missed.

    Subsequent Offenses - Consequences will include:
    - Loss of  technology privileges for their school account for the remainder of the year.
    - This means the student will not have access to any of their SAU account, including but not limited to, Google Classroom, Google Meet, and their school email for ALL classes and not just the one class where the inappropriate behavior was displayed. 
    - The student will receive paper copies of work to complete.

Parent Information and Expectations For Remote Learning

  • Call 352-0640 extension 3871 for technology help.

  • Reach out to individual teachers if you have instructional or content-specific questions. 

  • If you have additional questions or require support, reach out to your student’s School Counselor or House Office.

  • Parents may not join classroom Google Meet sessions. This is for students in the class only.

Special Education:

Bottom Line: our staff continue to make substantial progress on how to deliver specialized instruction remotely. As of yesterday, all families should have the learning materials and resources that are needed for remote learning.  Please reach out to your child’s building administrator if you feel your child’s instructional needs are not being met.  An administrator from your child’s building will reach back very soon.

Also, please continue to keep an eye out for any additional important FERPA releases that may be issued as they relate to group therapy, confidentiality and group instruction. Lastly, the Student Services Office continues to  move forward with the daily business of Special Education (evaluations, meetings, Medicaid ) remotely.  Thank you!

Meals:

About 450 students received meals today including 150 delivered to town schools.  Students DO NOT have to be present during meal pick-up. Given remote learning time conflicts, parents/guardians will be allowed to pick up meals for their student(s) and the program will shift the pick-up time for Keene sites. Meals for any student in SAU 29, pre-K - grade 12, can be picked up behind Franklin School and behind Keene High School from 7:30am-11:30 am every school day. We will be handing out two days worth of meals on Mondays and three on Wednesdays so that families only have to make two trips per week. If you cannot pick up on Monday or Wednesday we will still be open for meal pick up Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. 

In addition to the two pick up locations in Keene we added an option for those families that live in the surrounding town districts. Delivery to SAU#29 town schools  are made on Mondays (2 days of meals) and Wednesdays (3 days of meals) for pick up at noon at each school. An email to those eligible will have the order form that will need to be submitted by Thursday of each preceding week. One form per student please. Keene High Students living in Winchester and students in Stoddard grades 7 to 12 may use their town's school lunch program or may opt to use either aforementioned Keene sites.  Menus will vary based on availability and we will continue to update families as things change.

Technology:

Please continue to share the help desk number, (603)352-0640 ext 3871, with students and families.  It is the quickest way to get needed support.  Bob Miliken and his entire staff are working to provide technical assistance. If you need support with Google classroom please try here for help first.  If the guide fails to solve your issue do not hesitate to call our help desk. Please be careful - we are seeing a lot of scam emails coming through to your email. This could be from people using Free apps and websites. Remember to always check if you don’t know the sender. If you do not know the sender delete the email. If the email looks like it is from a coworker but sounds suspicious, call the coworker.  

School Buildings:

For this week, March 23 through March 27, all school buildings are open to staff only. There are no visitors permitted to enter the buildings. Buildings will limit hours, opening  from 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. These limited hours will facilitate a disinfection schedule so we can rest assured that our facilities will be safe for staff to arrive each morning.  All buildings will be closed on the weekends to all staff.  

Social Distancing:

While many students may view this period as vacation time, it has the added benefit of slowing down and preventing the transmission of the virus from one person to the next.  It is our recommendation that everyone carefully consider the impact of participation in daily routines and activities not only on your own family but also the impact it may have on others as well.
