KHS Extended Learning Opportunity Program

Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs) provide multiple ways for students to learn outside of the classroom and achieve credit toward high school graduation. These personalized learning opportunities are founded on student interest and need, and are planned in advance, and include rigorous content. They offer authentic opportunities for students to collaborate with a certified teacher and/or a community partner to demonstrate competencies. ELOs may take many forms, including, but not limited to, independent study, private instruction, performing groups, team sports, community service and internships. ELOs include four components: research, reflection, product and presentation. Assessment is based on achievement and demonstration of high school competencies and goals.

Step 1: Application Process

  • All ELOs begin with an application.
  • The student then meets with the ELO Coordinator to discuss their plan and request.
  • The ELO Coordinator seeks a mentor teacher and community partner, as applicable.

Step 2: ELO Planning and Implementation

  • The student, together with their overseeing teacher, the ELO Coordinator and/or community partner, will create a detailed ELO Plan and Contract that outlines specific competencies and/or learning objectives, a timeline, expectations, and final outcomes.
  • In implementing the ELO plan, the student will meet regularly with their overseeing teacher, the ELO Coordinator, and the community partner, as appropriate. The student should maintain documentation as required by their plan, (i.e. a portfolio of work, reflective journal, research notes and other evidence of learning.)

Step 3: ELO Evaluation

  • The ELO Coordinator will monitor progress throughout the ELO.
  • One month before the student anticipates completing their ELO, they should meet with the ELO Coordinator to discuss the final presentation and schedule a panel review.
  • The ELO Coordinator will make arrangements for the final presentation and panel review. The panel will evaluate the reflection, research, product, and presentation in which the student engaged.
  • Feedback will be shared with the student following their final presentation.
  • All ELOs are graded pass/fail and recorded on the student transcript within one week of the final presentation.
